ANFE-SORB is manufactured from the dry stalk of a unique plant, an annual agricultural crop. It is a member of the hibiscus family, (Hibiscuscannabinus L.), is related to cotton, hemp, and okra. The stalk of the plant is comprised of two fiber types. About one-third of the stalk’s dry weight is bark fiber known as bast.

The white inner core fiber is refined and is known as Liberian’s fiber, like soft wood fibers, fibers are used to make writing paper, paper for cigarettes, filter paper, and with the addition of polypropylene it produced a type of fiberglass. The core fibers that are refined, similar to the hardwood tree fibers, are used to make a wide range of paper products including composite panels, pet beds and oil absorbent material.

The plant grows rapidly from 12-14 feet in just about five months. In general are sowing in May and it is harvested in March, then is left to dry in the field during the months of winter. The plant is collected with a tractor or in “modules” and is normally stored on the environment until its processing. Absorbent products of vegetable origin are not reusable and are destined to oil spills on land, water or hard surfaces such as floors. Only a small amount of herbicides and pesticides are used on the crops.

In addition there are no chemicals or biological organisms that are added during or after the process. However, there are some beneficial microbes which are on the plant, these microbes’ feeds from hydrocarbons promoting the bioremediation. Also it is added a white rot fungus to improve even more all theproperties of bioremediation.
